The First Day of School
The first day of school is always filled with so many emotions: excited, nervous, scared, relieved. You name it and on the first day of school, someone in Opal 2 was feeling it. Coming into a community where connections, memories and friendships already exist for every child makes the change of a new school year feel a little less scary and a little more exciting.
On our first day of school one student in Opal 2 clearly stated what many of us had been thinking.
“It’s like two communities joining into one!”
Two communities joining into one provides all kinds of opportunities for growth and friendship. It also requires us to take a step outside of our comfort zone. It challenges us to find comfort in our familiar relationships while we take risks by asking new friends if they want to play, by choosing a new person to sit next to during lunch, by asking a question when someone responds differently than we might have expected. New relationships take work, and they take time. But this isn't the first time these children have had to step outside their comfort zone, to trust and share and learn about new friends.
“Let’s all work together to make something!”
“We need to build it all together!”
“We snapped our ideas together!”
This week in Opal 2 we have been surprised and delighted by the new connections and friendships and stories unfolding before us. We are looking forward to both starting and continuing to build relationships with and among the children's families, too! We (Joey & Kerry) hope you can join us at Back to School night on Monday, September 9, at 6:30.
