Invitation: Observations of Play
The invitation for this first Module is to find time to observe children at play. As you are going about your summer, maybe you’ll see a group of children playing at the campground you’re staying in, or on a walk around your neighborhood, or while you are shopping or out to eat. If you don’t have access to observing children in person, look back at Topic 3: The Role of Play and rewatch the video of 4, 5, and 6-year-olds during Story Workshop. Wherever you find a place to observe, take some time to slow down, listen, and pay attention. Take notes about what you see.
What do you notice about what the children are paying attention to? What do you notice about the questions they are asking?
What do the children seem to be learning through their play? What habits, skills, or dispositions are they developing?
If adults are involved, what do you notice about what they are paying attention to? What do you notice about the questions they are asking?
What connections are you making between your observations and the content you’ve explored throughout Module 1?
Then, record your observations in your journal.
