For those who are interested, you can see here how teachers choose to organize their time over the course of a week:
In the charter school, four days a week, the math workshop block aligns so that children ages 6 – 11 can be grouped according to their needs. These three "homeroom" groups are broken into five math groups.
The Opal 1 classroom does not participate in the math workshop inter-class breakouts. The state of Oregon only funds half-day kindergarten and some of our families opt to leave at half day, rather than paying the $3000 annual tuition for the extended day. Our Opal 1 teacher works to provide math experiences throughout the day so that all of the children have the opportunity to participate.
Our mathematics curriculum is guided by these resources:
- The Young Mathematicians at Work series
- Resources from Marilyn Burns
- Selected resources from The Math Learning Center
You can learn more about some of our work with mathematics in these posts on the Opal School Blog.
